Emiliano Grillo had little to say after turning in a glittering second round Friday during the Mayakoba Golf Classic at Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
That's just how good it was.
"Nothing really to comment about today," said Grillo, from Argentina. "Played well all day, made some good puts and hit it close.
"Everything worked today. Played from the fairway, hit it close and when it wasn't too close, I made putts. It was one of those days."
Grillo turned in an 8-under 63 at the El Camaleon Golf Club to tie the lowest round of his PGA Tour career. He has played 18 straight rounds at the event at no worse than even par.
Grillo had nine birdies and was 3 under after the first four holes. He will take a four-shot lead into Saturday, which could be a long day. Friday's start was delayed by an hour because of heavy rain in the morning, and play was halted with a few players still on the course because of darkness shortly after 6 p.m. ET.
Tom Hoge and Tony Finau each sit four shots back at 9-under 133. Finau carded a 5-under 66 on Friday, and during one stretch one-putted six consecutive holes in the middle of his round. Four of those one-puts saved par.
"That's always a good stat," Finau said. "I know the putter felt good in my hand and anytime it missed, it hit the hole, so that's usually a good sign.
"I got up and down when I needed to."
First-round leader Russell Knox, of Scotland, slid back a bit after a 2-under 69 on Friday, but remains in contention at 8 under overall and five shots off the pace.
The event is the last PGA Tour event of 2020, and the field included seven top 50 players from the world golf rankings, and four of the top 26.
And not all of them made the cut.
Justin Thomas, at No. 3 and the highest-ranked player in the field, rushed into contention with five birdies and an eagle through 12 holes. But he bogeyed his last two holes, and settled for a 4-under 67, putting him 10 shots back.
Brooks Koepka, coming off two straight top 10 finishes, posted an even-par 71 for a second straight day and missed the cut by a stroke.
Also below the cut line was Rickie Fowler, who finished with a 1-over 72 on Friday and joined Koepka at even-par 142 after two rounds.
